The annual meeting of the Institute of Neuroscience will again take place in Cavalese, from 19-22 January. The response from our members was particularly successful and about 140 participants are expected. This meeting is partly sponsored by funds kindly provided by the directorship of the CNR Dept of Medicine, and partly by a contribution from the Provincia Autonoma di Trento. As last year, the programme includes a series of oral presentations by scientists from the different branches of the IN, a poster session, and three keynote lectures. The latter will be delivered by Prof. Alessandro Quattrone (CIBIO, Trento), Prof. Rosario Rizzuto (University of Padua), and Prof. Lamberto Maffei (UOS Pisa, Director of the IN until 2009).

About

The Institute of Neuroscience of the National Research Council of Italy is a leading institution in the field of Neuroscience, both at the national and international levels. It concentrates many of the most important Italian scientists involved in the study of the nervous system, organised in research groups located in Cagliari, Milan, Padua, Pisa and Rome.

The Institute of Neuroscience covers a wide array of topics, from basic research to applied studies with the aim of preventing pathologies. In its different laboratories, the Institute investigates the development and plasticity of the nervous circuitery, focuses on vision and cognitive sciences, studies the mechanisms of memory and learning, cellular transmission and neuronal communication, calcium homeostasis, apoptosis, neuro-muscular and neuronal-glia interactions, as well as the neurobiological bases of alcoholism and drug dependence.

Research scientists working at the different laboratories of the Institure are leading figures employing state-of-the-art methodologies in areas such as cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, electrophysiology, neuroanatomy, neuropharmacology, neurochemistry, genetics, behavioural studies, psychophysics, neuroinformatics, and brain imaging. In several cases, specific and original instrumentation is designed and implemented to address unsolved problems in a new way.

Every year, the Institute of Neuroscience publishes a large number of research papers in leading peer-reviewed journals. The high impact of these publications render the Institute an internationally recognised entity, making it one of the most important centres in the field of neuroscience.

Details about the research projects that are currently being pursued by scientists at the Institute of Neuroscience can be found in the section dedicated to each city.
