Mitochondrial and neuromuscular physiology
Like all other organs, the nervous system depends on mitochondria for life, function and death. Research themes in our Institute include the participation of these organelles in cellular and extracellular signalling (Ca2+, ROS, “alarmins”), their dynamics, their role in aging, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer. Voluntary muscles are the system through which we project our volition onto the environment, an extension of our nervous system. Involuntary muscles are what keeps our complex bodies alive and functioning. We study the innervation of muscles, their specialized developmental program, atrophy and dystrophies, the regeneration of the neuromuscular junction after damage, the mechanisms and possible remedies of damage.
