Chemistry and biology of natural compounds
Research interests
My research interests are mainly focused on natural compounds and their utilization in the biomedical field. Research activity includes the development of derivatives to improve their pharmacological exploitation, pharmacokinetics studies, and investigation of the mechanisms of action underlying the activity of both natural compounds and their derivatives.
Among the molecules under study are pterostilbene and its derivatives, which are emerging as useful tools to contrast obesity and cognitive decline.
Other molecules under investigation are synthetic derivatives of the natural compound psoralen. In collaboration with the group led by prof. Ildikò Szabò at the Dept. of Biology, University of Padova, we are participating in a project using these constructs as anti-tumorals targeting ion-conducting channels of the mitochondrial inner membrane (IMM).
