Neuroepidemiology section (Florence)

Research summary

Major areas of interest are epidemiology and implementation of research results, organisation, knowledge and care of age-related neurological diseases, mainly stroke, dementia, Parkinson’s disease and peripheral neuropathies. This was developed in a number of national and international projects, involving large number of subjects in population-based studies and of patients in several hospital registers. The new “Project FAI: La Fibrillazione Atriale in Italia (Atrial Fibrillation in Italy). A cooperative study with GPs to guarantee cost-effective treatments to patients with atrial fibrillation, aiming at reducing the risk of stroke”, financed by the Italian Ministry of Health, National Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, started on April 2015, and will enrol 6,000 patients in 3 Italian regions (Lombardia, Tuscany and Calabria). Other areas of interest include stroke promotional activities to increase stroke knowledge and awareness in the general population, working with Dept. of Health of Regione Toscana to the 2014 Stroke Educational Campaign, and the development of the first Italian stroke application for smartphone, tablet and PC (ICTUS3R).

Main results are the publication of original data on frequency and prognosis of major cardiovascular and neurological disease in Italy, frequency and prognosis of stroke, dementia and Parkinson’s disease in Europe, frequency of mild cognitive impairment in Italy, role of age, gender and vascular risk factors on stroke severity, relevance of stroke unit care, quality indicators, and continuity of care in prognosis of stroke patients, strategies of implementation of research results in stroke care in Europe.
