Neurophysiology of neurodevelopmental disorders

Mutations in many genes have been linked to increased risk of developing neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) such as intellectual disability (ID), autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (INCL). Often, these pathologies share clinical and genetic components with different neuropsychiatric disorders resulting in high comorbidity.

Nowadays, one of the main causes of NDDs pathophysiology is considered to be the alteration of the Excitation/Inhibition (E/I) balance, that leeds to aberrant neuronal functions and brain connectome. Indeed, our brain, in order to work properly, needs a fine tuning of excitatory and inhibitory signals, and a balanced E/I ratio is fundamental to obtain a proper brain maturation and function, in terms of synapse formation and brain wiring. However, our knowledge on the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms at the basis of a proper brain development is still insufficient.

For these reasons, the main goal of my research is to better understand how brain functions and connections are altered in genetic models of NDDs, such as ASD and Infantile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (INCL). For this purpose I mainly use cutting-edge techniques in the field of electrophysiology.
