Research summary

Marzia Baldereschi, MD, studies causes and consequences of major age-associated neurological diseases: dementia, Alzheimer’s diseases, Parkinson’s disease, polyneuropathies, and stroke.
Research is conducted using large epidemiologic studies, which allow us to test in the general population, hypotheses on risk/protective factors and mechanisms identified by basic and clinical research.
Studies focus on estimating the actual frequencies of neurological diseases in the population and on understanding the contribution of metabolic, vascular, hormonal, professional exposures, etc. to such diseases, as well as investigating the link between neurological diseases and other common conditions of old age (hypertension, diabetes, etc.).
Significance to patient care: Research into risk or protective factors for neurological diseases, such as Parkinson's disease, dementia or stroke, will help prevent and better treat these diseases.
For more than 20 years Marzia Baldereschi worked at the CNR-PF Invecchiamento to develop the neurologic component in the ILSA (Italian Longitudinal Study on Aging) study, a large prospective cohort study on chronic diseases in the elderly.
Currently, Marzia Baldereschi has been involved into stroke promotional activities to increase stroke knowledge and awareness in the general population. She has been working with Dept. of Health of Regione Toscana to develop the 2014 Stroke Educational Campaign. She has also worked to develop the first Italian stroke application for smartphone, tablet and PC (ICTUS3R)
