Born in 1970, Andrea Tura got the Degree in Electronic Engineering (specialization in Biomedical Engineering) at the University of Bologna, in 1995. He got the PhD in Bioengineering in 1999 with a thesis on mathematical modelling and image analysis on cardiovascular fluid dynamics. He joined LADSEB-CNR in 1999 and started working on mathematical modelling applied to glucose metabolism. In 2001 he had an experience in a private Company working in the field of tele-home care of subjects with chronic diseases through proper telemedicine instruments and platforms. At the end of the same year he joined again the LADSEB-CNR (then ISIB-CNR) as established investigator. In 2014, he joined IN-CNR.
Currently, Dr. Tura is mainly focused on the study of data from continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), and on the assessment of glucose homeostasis, with specific attention to pancreatic beta-cell function, insulin secretion, insulin sensitivity and insulin clearance. The target population of major interest is currently that of women during pregnancy, especially when complicated by gestational diabetes (GDM), but other types of diabetes are also of interest, such as type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and post-transplant diabetes. Recently, Dr. Tura has also got interested in some possible complications of diabetes, especially sarcopenia. Regarding the methodological approaches, in addition to mathematical modelling for development of physiologically-based models, Dr. Tura has recently gained expertise in the development of statistical models based on machine learning and artificial intelligence approaches.
Dr. Tura is author of more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, of which more than 50 with primary role (first or last author). Current H-index is 60 (Google Scholar), 48 (SCOPUS) (last checked: June 2026).

Research interest
- Analysis of sequences of data, with special interest to continuous glucose monitoring data (CGM), for the estimation of CGM metrics of glycemic control and glycemic variability, especially in women with gestational diabetes (GDM).
- In-silico mathematical models and methods for quantitative physiology and quantitative clinical tests, particularly in GDM, but also in other types of diabetes (type 1, type 2, post-transplant) and related complications (kidney and cardiovascular diseases). Special interest is on assessment of pancreatic beta-cell function, insulin secretion, insulin sensitivity and insulin clearance.
- Assessment of muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance, for detection of pre-sarcopenia or sarcopenia, even in non-elderly populations, such as that of women with GDM.
- Phenotyping of subjects through clustering approaches, for the identification of subjects’ subtypes, especially in women both with and without GDM.
- Monitoring of subjects based on the use of portable and wearable devices, for the assessment of specific conditions, such as the level of work-related stress.
- Glucose monitoring through non-invasive techniques, with special focus on electro-impedance spectroscopy approach.
