Born in 1949, Giovanni Pacini, after graduating in Electronic Engineering at the University of Florence, Italy, was CNR fellow from 1976 to 1979, when he began his American experience first as a Visiting Scientist and then as a Visiting Professor at the Department of Physiology and Biophysics of the School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.
In 1985 he returned to Italy where he joined the Bioengineering Research Group at the Institute of Systems Science and Biomedical Engineering of the National Research Council in Padova. From 1991 to 2001, he was the Chairman of the Institute. From April 2013 until August 2014, he was Acting Director of ISIB.From September 2014 he is Research Associate at the Institute of Neurosciences. From 2010 to 2013 he was CNR representative in the Standing Committee for Medical Science of the European Science Foundation (EMRC-ESF)In the years 2014-15, he was member of the Scientific Review Group (Medicine) of the ESF.
Current fields of interest are methodologies for physiological processes related to diabetes: in particular, the use of mathematical modelling for detailed description of beta cell function and its relationships with insulin resistance.
He is author or co-author of 250+ articles in peer reviewed medical journals and of about 30 chapters in books/proceedings of international conferences. He presented more than 200 communications at international meetings and conferences in the field of diabetes and related disorders. He has organized workshops on methodological aspects of diabetes research and has been member of Scientific Committees of many international conferences.
Giovanni Pacini has been the Chairman of the Technical Committee on Measurements in Medicine and Biology of the International Measurement Conference (IMEKO) from 1995 to 2001.
He is serving as member of the Advisory Board of Diabetologia, the official journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and member of the Editorial Board of the journal Current Diabetes Reviews.
